Wrong person for the job?

"You're kidding me. I mean you simply can't be serious."

"I'm not kidding Brandi," Polygirl replied over the radio. "You are the closest one. I'll try to get you backup as soon as possible, but we need someone there now!"

"Ok, I'm on my way."

It only took a minute for FireBrandi to arrive on the scene. A big commercial area in Eden island was under attack, and there was the villain causing chaos. Dark Inferna was flying low over the street. Jets of flame came from her hands setting cars and stores on each side of her on fire, enjoying the destruction she left behind.

Catching up to her FireBrandi threw a blast at Inferna's back. Dark Inferna slowed down and looked around with the expression of someone who suddenly felt a draft and wondered where it was coming from.

"You? Hah! That's rich. They sent the little copycat to try and stop me?"

"Hey, I've probably been doing this longer than you have. Just not around here. You're the one taking my shtick." Brandi threw a stronger blast, with all the effect of making Inferna's hair wave in the breeze.

"Nice try small timer, but your power doesn't bother me a bit. Let's see if you can take as well as you can dish out." Inferna's hand became engulfed in a ball of fire. She pointed at FireBrandi and the flames shot out like a flamethrower. Brandi's hair fluttered in the blast, becoming slightly more wild than normal.

"Oohhhkay, that exchange was pointless. How about we settle this with Rock, Paper, Scissors? You can go first."

With a chuckle Inferna turned away. "Run along small fry. You are no threat to me, and I have some damage to do." She threw a blast at some spectators that emerged to see the exchange. They dodged back under cover just in time.

Before she could laugh at their terror FireBrandi rammed Dark Inferna from behind, thrusting her forward. FireBrandi delivered a flurry of punches into Inferna's ribs as she turned around. Inferna threw a punch at Brandi, but she dodged easily. She countered with a knee to the side.

Dark Inferna gritted her teeth in anger. She threw another wild punch that FireBrandi dodged, but she kept spinning with the punch, her leg swinging around, catching Brandi as she tried to move back in to counter attack. Brandi tried to move in again, but Inferna's kicks kept her at bay. With her greater reach Brandi had trouble getting close enough to strike.
Inferna threw a roundhouse kick, FireBrandi caught it and spun in the air, twisting Inferna over, driving a foot into her back. Flying in the direction of the kick she drove Inferna into stone facade of a nearby building. Inferna grabbed onto the building for leverage and started kicking back at Brandi, freeing her leg.

With a snarl of anger Dark Inferna kicked off the building, throwing a wild punch at Brandi. FireBrandi ducked the blow, grabbed her wrist and tried to twist it into an armlock. Inferna twisted in the air, preventing the lock and managed to swing her legs around, wrapping them around Brandi's waist. She started to pound on Brandi's face and chest. Brandi tried to block with one arm while punching back, but couldn't get any higher than Inferna's stomach. Switching tactics Brandi grabbed Inferna's arm, jerking it to her and bit down as hard as she could.

Inferna screamed in pain, pushing FireBrandi away from her. "You little animal!" She dove down toward the street, FireBrandi quickly followed. "Have to get a rabies shot after I kill this twerp." She leveled off at street level, flying through the wreckage she caused. At the street corner she grabbed hold of a lamp post, whipping herself around the corner at high speed. FireBrandi grabbed the same post, whipped around to find Dark Inferna had expected this. Inferna had spun around, kicked off of a truck to reverse direction. Her outstretched arm clotheslined Brandi, taking them both down. Inferna managed to keep her arm wrapped around Brandi's neck, putting her into a choke hold.

"Bite me you little bitch? I'm going to put you down like a rabid dog."

FireBrandi couldn't breath. She struck at the arm around her neck to no effect. Raising her arm she brought it down hard, striking at Inferna's side behind her. Inferna learned then the spikes on FireBrandi's costume were not just for decoration. They were made of high temperature resistant ceramic, and were as sharp as they looked. The angle was bad so they didn't cut deep, but they did hurt.

Inferna dropped her, jumping back. Checking her wound she saw it wasn't deep. Rage filled her as she saw Brandi leaning on a car for support as she held her throat. Dark Inferna summoned up her power, sending a large jet of flames at FireBrandi. Brandi was momentarily confused, realizing only too late the danger. The car she had been leaning on blew up, the concussive force throwing her small frame to the street. Inferna grabbed the stunned Brandi by the hair. She dragged Brandi to another wrecked car, trying to slam her head into the side. Brandi got her hands in front of her in time to soften the impact. Inferna yanked her head back for another try. It was then they were jolted by an electric shock. Not enough to hurt, but it got their attention.

"Shit! We were just getting to the fun part." Dark Inferna flew away.

Seconds later Mindy Marvel touched down next to FireBrandi. "Brandi!! How bad are you hurt? Do you need an ambulance?" Mindy asked as she cradled Brandi.

"No, I'll be ok. Just give me a second to pull myself together." Brandi shakily got to her feet with Mindy's help.

"Dark Inferna can be a rough opponent. You get yourself checked out, I'll take it from here."

"Wait, I can help. We can try that strategy I came up with. The one I told you about."

Mindy looked puzzled as she tried to recall. After a moment's thought her eyes opened wide. "That strategy? I thought you were joking."

"C'mon, it'll work, I'm sure of it."

"Ok," Mindy agreed reluctantly, "if you are sure about this."

Mindy grabbed hold of the back of Brandi's belt with one hand. Lifting her up Mindy took off, flying down the street holding FireBrandi in front of her.

"YYYYEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!" Brandi cheered as they took off in pursuit of Dark Inferna.

Inferna hovered far down the street. FireBrandi was nothing to her, but Mindy Marvel was a threat. Inferna started building up power. With enough time she might build up a strong enough blast to roast that annoyance in one shot. She appeared as a ball of fire floating high above, glowing intensely.

There! Mindy was on her way. Dark Inferna focused her power.... Just a few seconds more..... And NOW! She threw out one of the most intense attacks she had ever made. It roared out and smashed into... FireBrandi?!?

With Mindy using Brandi as a human shield most of the blast washed past her, only singing her cape. Mindy moved Brandi aside and shot an electric blast at the very surprised Dark Inferna.

Inferna managed to dodge the lightning bolt, coming back with a fireball only to see it wash across Brandi's smirking form. Mindy came around with a hook, grazing her shoulder. Inferna spun and returned with a flame jet from both hands lighting up Brandi as she stuck her tongue out at her. Inferna ducked another attack from Mindy, but couldn't find a way past her improvised shield. Fine, new tactic.

Inferna swung forward with another blast. Mindy blocked with FireBrandi. The blast hit her with no effect, but the fist right behind it caught Brandi in the face. More flaming punches fell, insuring that Inferna will at least hurt whoever she hits. FireBrandi started punching and kicking back as best she could. Mindy was finding it increasingly awkward fighting this way with Brandi's flailing and trying not to hurt her while swinging her around.

"Snap!" Mindy gave the signal. Letting go Mindy Marvel moved right and FireBrandi moved left, attacking Dark Inferna from both sides. Inferna couldn't dodge both of them in time. Mindy's kick caught her in the side. Inferna tumbled through the air, smashing into the sign over a large fashion boutique.

"Damn it... Guess that's enough damage for today. I'm out of here!" Inferna melted a nearby window and flew into the building. Screams were heard in the street as fires stared in the building. Mindy Marvel and Brandi rushed in, trying to get the fire under control while evacuating everyone.

An hour later all the fires were out, and the injured were being helped. Cleanup had begun. Brandi came over to Mindy with a couple cups. "Got you some coffee. Thanks so for saving my butt back there."

Mindy gratefully took the drink, "Any time. You did pretty well against her considering."

"I guess so. Any idea what she was up to?"

Mindy shook her head, "No idea. She usually has a reason for her attacks, even if they can be very petty reasons. It is likely this was a distraction for something, but what?"

Sometimes heroes and villains are a good match for each other, and sometimes the match up makes things a little more.. ehh.. messy. This is one of the more messy cases.
