Soviet Superwoman glided quickly through the air heading for a fight.  When they took down Genocide and many of her troops not that long ago the police interrogators managed to get information on a number of bases and supply stashes.  It had been decided to set up surveillance equipment at some of those locations to try and capture even more of these criminals.  A minute ago the alert went off on one of the supply stations and Soviet Superwoman was off to catch them.

She spotted them from the air.  A non-descript truck parked by a self storage bay, and five of the Fourth Reich soldiers opening it up.  Olga quietly dropped down behind two that were on lookout, grabbed them by the head and banged them together.  As they crumpled to the ground, unconscious, a third struck Soviet Superwoman in the back of the head with the butt of her rifle.  The rifle's stock cracked under the impact.  The Russian powerhouse turned around with an incredulous look that seemed to say 'what did you think that would accomplish?'   She picked up the soldier and threw her into the back of the truck, leaving a rather large dent in the back and bumper.  That seemed to alert the driver, as the truck started up and abandoned the rest of the group, speeding away.  The last two troops opened fire with their rifles.  The bullets had as much effect as spit balls.  Soviet Superwoman grabbed their rifles, crushing them.  Once they were knocked out she tossed the lot of them into the storage unit and locked it.  That would hold them until the police could pick them up.

She flew off in pursuit of the truck.  It only took a few seconds to spot it from the air and catch up.  Tires squealed as it turned down another side street, but it did no good.  Soviet Superwoman reached out to grab the rear of the truck and pick it up when there was a flash of light.  She blinked and the truck was gone, not even a tire track to show where it had been, or the roar of an engine within hearing distance.  Olga looked around in confusion.  She spent an hour flying around trying to see if the truck was still around, but no luck, it was gone.  She decided to call Det. Angie and see if the police had gotten any rumor of this from the prisoners they have.

--------------------------------------------------

FireBrandi waited on the rooftop.  She got a call earlier from Detective Angie that worried her.  Apparently Kim Paler has given access to her teleportation system to the 4th Reich's troops.  Angie set up a meeting between FireBrandi and Soviet Superwoman so they could compare notes.  She did not have to wait long.  Soviet Superwoman glided in majestically to a landing just in front of Brandi.

FB: "Oh, new uniform?  Nice, I like it.  Any idea when they will come out with this design on an action figure?"

SSW: "You wish to have an action figure of me?"

FB: "Sure!  I've got all the ones they had at this cool toy store, the Hall of Just-Toys.  I think it is pretty cool to get your own action figure.  Do you have any of yourself?"

SSW: "I.. do not have any toys like that, but I have seen them.  You have one of yourself?"

FB: "Unfortunately no.  They didn't seem to have one of me yet.  Hope it looks cool when they do make one.  So Angie tells me the Nazi's have started using Kim Paler's teleportation network."

FireBrandi fills Soviet Superwoman in on Kim Paler's history, what is known of it.  Some of her armaments and what is known of this network she has created.  "We know she is leasing access to low level criminals, probably for the easy money.  Now with her giving access to major criminal organizations, who knows what kind of deals she is making, alliances, or who else has access so already.  We need to shut this down before criminals become unmatchable.  Her setup will likely be well defended; we might need extra help once it is found."

SSW:  "Then we shall get help once we have found this machine.  There are many heroes we can call upon"

FB: "By the way, are you going to join that super team that Stranger Industries is sponsoring?"

A sad look passes over Soviet Superwoman's eyes, "Nyet, I would not want my presence to become a problem for the team."

FB: "A problem?  How could having one of the biggest heroes in the city be a problem?"

SSW: "There are problems because of when I fought with a Russian ship, and there are many people here that view communism as a great evil.  My joining a team would bring such unfavorable views onto everyone there."

Brandi rolls her eyes, "Oh please, as if someone trapped in a burning building is going to ask about political affiliations before being rescued.  And honestly that whole Capitalist/Communist thing is just stupid.  Both of them are utopian pipe-dreams that require everyone to be perfect saints, following the philosophy without trying to screw over others for their own benefit.  They don't work in the real world.  If people were such saints then there wouldn't be any need for us.  The USSR was not truly communist; it turned into a totalitarian regime.  And the US is not pure capitalist.  Screw all that!  I'm here to help people, and I welcome anyone else who wants to help.  If someone chooses who to help based on their politics then I have a problem with them.  I've never seen you refuse to help so I don't have a problem with you."

SSW: "You believe both are 'pipe-dreams'?"

FB: "Yes.  While a good government can use aspects of those philosophies, as well as others, I don't believe either of them can work by itself in the real world.  When people start screaming about either of them it seems to me more used as a distraction from what governments are actually doing.  Keep people believing in the utopian dream and scared of the 'other' while what they are really getting is screwed over for the benefit of those in power."

SSW: "Is that how you view the Communist revolution?  Do you think the Stalin of my world was a dictator?"

Brandi looks rather uncomfortable, "You want my honest opinion?"

SSW: "Yes, I would be interested to hear what you think."

FB: "All right.  I have some experience with alternate universes, and have even encountered other evil and good versions of myself.  It is possible that the Stalin of your world was a good man.  But it is also possible that he was little different than the ones from other worlds.  I've seen how cults work.  Not all are religious; they can be political or philosophical too.  The Stalin government I've seen was like that.  People are drawn in by the high ideals presented, the promise of something better.  Usually there is an outside enemy, real or made up, to keep people focused on, to blame their problems on, to keep them from noticing how things are not matching up to the promises.  Then there are the rationalizations, where the bad things going on are excused as necessary for 'the greater good'.  You might want to read Animal Farm for a view of how something that started with good intentions, good goals, gets corrupted."

"Sometimes such groups will use celebrities as a symbol to help inspire people, to keep them believing in the organization.  You've probably seen actors used as spokespeople for all kinds of stuff, their fame being used to add credibility to whatever they are asked to speak for.  It is no different with us.  People want the big hero to at least appear as if they support their cause, not to mention all those that would manipulate us for our power.  You were loved and respected in your country, so it is only natural the government would want your full support.  Being a true hero, someone who actually wants to help people, anyone who wants to use us will try to keep us in an information bubble.  They would surround us with people to make sure we only hear what they want us to hear, keep us from finding out things that would make us question our association.  We always have to be watchful for that.  I'm joining this group Stranger Industries is putting together, but I'm also keeping my eyes open.  If they try to use us for their own ends, if they try to manipulate us, then I'm out of there."

SSW: "So you believe I was just being used by my government?  That I was just a fool being manipulated?"

Brandi looks at SSW with sympathy.  "I don't know, I was not there.  It is possible, but even if it is true do not let it bring you down.  For all our abilities we are still just human.  Any of us can be fooled if the right approach is taken.  In your case I would say taking advantage of your love.  Your love of your country and its people.  I can understand that.  I love my country, and believe in the principals it was founded on.  It can be hard to admit when our country does not live up to those principals.  Or even seem to be actively undermining them.  Heck, there have been a few of our leaders that I think needed to be thrown into a deep, dark cell and forgotten, and they get away with their crimes.  All we can do is live up to the principals we believe in, and hope people will follow our lead, moving the country in the right direction."

SSW: "Is that the only thing we can do?  When politicians try to subvert our homes we have to just stand by?"

FB: "If the country's law enforcement is not trying to bring them down, and the people are not trying to remove them, we can only speak out against them.  If we try to remove them by force then we become the super-dictators that we fight against, that people fear us becoming.  If we overthrow the government, no matter how justified our reasons, are we that different from Ultrawoman who thinks she is making it a better world by imposing her will on it?  I know it is not easy, but we have to play by societies rules, otherwise we are placing ourselves above the people we swear to protect, making us their masters rather than helpers."

That made Olga think.  Was she being that different from Ultrawoman when she tried to overthrow the Russian government, because it did not live up to what she thought it should be?  "You have given me much to think about.  Thank you."

FB: "uh.. so... still want my help with this case?"

SSW: "Yes, you have been open and honest with me.  And you are here to help, I am glad for that"

FB: "Good!  I'm glad to lend a hand.  Oh, by the way... how often do you interact with regular people?  The police and charity events don't count."

SSW:  "What?" taken aback.

FB: "We both want to help people, but how often do we interact with them?  How can we know what they need, what they are thinking, what their concerns are?  I have a day job that.. Well it lets me eat and pay the rent.  Being a hero doesn't always pay well.  But it also lets me meet a lot of nice people.  Also a few online forums let me see what the buzz is around the city.  How often do you just hang out with people?"

SSW: "uh... I do not have such a job."

FB: "You should consider getting out among people more.  I think it helps to keep us from becoming disconnected with the non-powered.  And it might help your public image, if people get to talk to you and find out what kind of person you are.  Maybe go to a festival sometime.  Have a hot dog or popcorn while enjoying the entertainment.  There will likely be some people who might give you a hard time, but there will be some who will be fun to talk to.  I'll even go with you if you like."

SSW: "I will consider it.  Yes, I think I will go to a festival with you."

FB: "Great!  Whew.. Did I really say all that stuff?  Regular chatterbox tonight.  Anyway, back to business.  If we could get to one of those Nazi bases we might be able to find someone who knows more about how the teleportation system works.  But how can we find them when tracking devices won't work, and they can just jump around the city to loose anyone trying to follow them.

Olga considered, "I think I have an idea, if the police are willing to help us"

so missguided Firebrandi, I don't believe in pure captialism but true captialism. Where the gov has a very limited influence, just enough to keep things honest and punish those who break the rules. What the US has total is Crony Captialism which breeds in heavy gov. influence. Communsim is for those who had tried something and failed and rather than try something else which captialism allows they rant against it claiming unfair, well this is real life is unfair.
