-- Today, Angel Falls Docks area

Soviet Superwoman knew she was flying into a trap.  Getting a tip on possible 4th Reich activity, including a description of Genocide in her non-powered form?  It is never that easy.  The question is who is trying to trap her and for what reason.  The only way to answer that is to spring the trap and see who appears.  Lin should be there shortly afterwards with the AFPD should she need help.

Olga arrived at the warehouse specified in the tip.  Nothing seemed out of place so far.  Forgoing subtlety she crashed through the wall into the main area, quickly looking around for the ambush.

"My, that was fast.  Thank you for coming so quickly," came a voice from one end of the room.

Olga turned to see who it was.  "Paler!  Why did you lure me here?"

"Why I needed your help of course," Kim said.  Slung from her shoulder was a large weapon of some kind.  It was at least five feet long, a foot wide barrel, pistol grip on one side and a shoulder strap to help carry it.  "I need you to help me test out my new weapon.  Don't worry, this won't hurt for long."  A building hum started coming from the device, lights growing in intensity as Kim took aim.

Soviet Superwoman dove to one side, just as the laser blast scorched the ground where she had been standing.  Kim swept the beam after her, scarring the floor and wall as she tracked her target, but Soviet Superwoman flew out through the wall.  Kim slowly turned, watchful for the coming attack, trying to predict where the hero would charge from.

A moment later Olga crashed through the ceiling, dropping down directly onto Kim Paler's back, knocking her to the ground.  She grabbed two of the cybernetic legs and ripped them off.  The legs were rather banged up, probably battle worn from Kim's fight against the Guardians Olga thought.  The other two legs swiveled and opened fire.  Soviet Superwoman put her arms up to shield herself from the blast, but she didn't back off.  Instead she reached down and grabbed another leg.  She crushed its weapon systems in her clenched fist.  Then she swung the leg around, and Kim with it, throwing her against the wall.  Kim hit hard and dropped down to the floor.  Olga looked down at Kim's new weapon, and crushed it under her heel.

Kim, standing once again, pulled out her mace, "Have to do this the old fashioned way then."  Soviet Superwoman charged forward, and managed to catch Kim's mace hand in one of her own.  Olga's other hand grab the last functioning crab leg.  The sound of crunching metal and shattering glass came from her fist as the last of Kim's cybernetic weaponry was disabled.

"It is over Paler, you are beaten."

Olga felt something against her stomach.  Looking down she saw Kim's free hand holding a small gun, with something like a radar dish on the front making it look like a ray gun from old sci-fi movies.  Kim pulled the trigger and a blinding blue light filled the room.  The whoosh and crackle of high energy unleashed filled the air and Olga's world as she was thrown back.

As the glare faded Kim looked at the thirty foot wide hole in the far wall, and the large chuck taken out of the building across the street giving a pleasant view of the harbor.  She looked at the gun in her hand, smoke rising from the partially melted materials.  With a frown she activated her communicator.

"Savant, big improvement, but the beam is still diffusing too much.  The unit is still being fried by heat leak.  It might be good for another shot, but that would be it."

*Yes, I saw on the monitors.  By my calculation Soviet Superwoman survived, you should return to the lab before she recovers.*

Kim waited briefcase in hand, on an upper floor of a building still under construction. It was the weekend so no workers were present.  The outer wall had not been added to this level yet, leaving most of the rooms open to the cool afternoon breeze.

Trying to contact super villains can be tricky.  Negotiating with them can be near impossible depending on their power level, arrogance, ego, and their perception of your power.  She hoped Twisted Savant, being a scientific genius, would be more open to reasonable discussions.

"A pleasure to meet you Ms. Paler."

Kim turned to see the imposing figure of Twisted Savant flying in.  His green armor gleaming as he gently touched down.

"A pleasure to meet you as well Savant, may I call you Savant?"

"You may.  I take it you are here to offer me a deal for access to your teleportation network.  It seemed like a useful system, but I hear The Guardians have compromised its functions."

"Oh no, I have several backups and redundancies to make it very difficult to shut down, as well as a number of ways to make tracking the system down difficult.  Not all these security measures were in place as I had hoped to lure in a hero or two.  Their deaths would have discouraged further interference in my business.  It was just unfortunate that they brought an unexpectedly large force, allowing them to escape my trap.  I'm sure you could make suggestions on how to increase the security of my system, reducing the likelihood of another such attack.  But we can discuss the network later.  I sought your expertise to aid in another project.  My weapon designer has hit some technical hurdles that neither of us can overcome."

"Mr. Dale Rendick, yes I am familiar with his designs.  A talented man.  What is it you have his destructive skills working on?"

Kim was a little unsettled, though not surprised that Savant would know who she has in her employ.  She set her briefcase on a nearby workbench.  Opening it up she accessed the laptop inside, calling up the schematics of her project.  Savant looked on with interest as it was explained to him.  A remote triggering device and receiver shaped a bit like a bad sci-fi ray gun.  When the trigger is pulled a signal is sent to a device that will create a teleportation portal.  One end is generated in front of the receiver on the 'gun'.  The other end is generated on the wall of a room, in front of a twenty ton particle beam cannon.

"Originally it was an idea I had for letting small vehicles, or armor, make use of firepower much greater than they should reasonably have.  The problems we are having right now are on exiting the portal the beam is diffused, spread out like a flashlight rather than a laser, blasting half the room.  This also causes it to be practically worthless beyond very short range.  Also there is a lot of heat and radiation generated, causing the unit to melt"

"Yes, this has great potential.  I believe there is a way to make this work, if you will let me access your weapons lab."

-- Today, Angel Falls Harbor

The waters of the harbor sprayed skyward as Soviet Superwoman flew up from where she had landed, gasping for air.  Taking stock of herself she found the front of her costume was largely a charred ruin.  Her skin was red and tender, but should heal quickly.  Of much greater concern to her was what kind of weapon that was.  Such power in a small device, she needed to warn the other heroes about it, before someone else fell for its deceptive size.  She started to fly home for a change of costume.  Hopefully Maia would be there, and they could both spread the word.

-- Today, in a hidden lab

Kim, finished disposing of what was left of the battered, battle-worn cybernetic legs unit she wore knowing Soviet Superwoman would trash them.  "I looked at your plans for flying micro droids to create the portal exit point instead of my gun.  Very useful, especially if you have your hands full, or need to be elsewhere.  My only concern is the chance of ending up in the line of fire."

"I can incorporate a Friend-or-Foe unit into the design.  That will prevent any such accidents."

With a fresh set now attached to her back she joined Twisted Savant in the weapons lab.

"The compensation for size differential in the portals worked as expected.  The remaining issue is the quantum stabilization field.  To maintain field integrity while this level of energy passes through the portal we will need to increase the field's power by 23.1%."

Kim frowned at the news and pounded her fist on the table, "Damn it!  Another 23%?"

"23.1%.  This will work; you have my assurance on that."

"I have complete faith in your calculations.  My frustration is we were already at the point where power usage and energy fields generated could be detectable by those who know what to look for.  An increase in output like that, we might as well send up flares to show where this lab is."  Kim crossed her arms with a sigh, "It will have to be a weapon of last resort then.  Use it and expect this base to be swarmed with heroes shortly afterwards."  A cruel smile played on her lips, "and then they can attend the funeral of whoever it is we used it on."

"The loss of equipment or a base is to be expected on occasion.  Even if it is only used once, we have a very useful weapon for that one shot.  I think we should celebrate this successful project."

Kim smiled, "You are right, we should celebrate this momentous occasion.  What do you have in mind?"

Particle beam technology? Interesting... Very interesting indeed...

Kim Paler isn't the one to lay low after a less than completely succesful encounter with the heroes of Angel Falls I take it.
