One slow, excruciating step. Then another. Each one taking all her concentration. FireBrandi was moving forward on sheer willpower alone. But her goal was finally in sight. The struggle had seemed endless. It has taken everything she had. She couldn't quit, she could never give up! In the end she had won. It was almost over now.
Another step... Another.. She has arrived. What strength remained disappeared. Brandi fell forward, she thought she could hear the wind whistling past her ears as she fell. With a muffled thud FireBrandi flopped down on the couch in the Guardians lounge. Curling up in a corner she began to snore softly.
A short time later Cedric walked in, "Hey, anybody home?"
A cushion struck him in the face. Cedric blinked in surprise. Peeking over the back of the couch he found Brandi curling up again, an annoyed look on her face.
Poly Girl walked in, "Cedric? Good timing. We just got in the data from Siege's time in prison. I haven't analyzed it yet, but we might find something useful there."
"Great, anything that can give us an edge against that thing." He glanced down at Brandi. "What is up with her?"
Poly looked at Brandi while pulling out her data pad. "She wasn't scheduled for patrol yesterday."
*tap* *tap* *tap*
"She didn't log any encounters or investigations.
"No police reports involving her." *tap* "No unusual fires reported."
"Even her civilian schedule is normal"
Cedric raised an eyebrow, "Civilian schedule? As in secret ID? How does a pint sized redhead like her not get recognized?"
Poly glanced at Brandi, then put a hand by her mouth and whispered to him, "a lot of the students in the university do recognize her. They keep her 'secret' out of respect, and because they like it when she comes to their parties. Also they joke about the people who can't tell it's her."
Cedric nodded, thinking he might have to drop by the campus to see this for himself.
Poly turned back to her data pad.
*tap* *tap* "No," *tap* *tap* "no" *tap*
"Ah ha! New download content for that game she's been playing came out yesterday." She turned to Brandi with a triumphant grin, "pulled an all nighter, didn't you?"
"Mmnphmnm" came the muffled response.
Satisfied, Poly turned back to Cedric. "One mystery solved. Now let me show you that data." She said, then headed out of the room.
Cedric started to follow her, but stopped. He leaned over the back of the couch.
"GOODBYE BRANDIII!!!" Then ran for the door, dodging several more cushions.
Brandi grumbled, and went back to sleep.
A couple hours later she was woken by the emergence alert. Poly's voice announced over the communicators, "Multiple attacks around the city. Initial reports of street gangs with advanced weaponry."
Brandi was up in an instant. Within seconds she was out and in flight. "FB heading out from HQ. What is closest?"
"There is a shoot out to the west at.... Hold on, new report. Attack on a bank, north of your position. It's Kim Paler!"
FireBrandi made a sharp turn north, "I'm on it!"
